WARNING  According to Breaking TWIG's readers, you may not be able to put this book down!

Set in rural Georgia in the 1960s, BREAKING TWIG is a coming-of-age novel about Becky (Twig) Cooper, a young woman trying to survive the physical and emotional abuse of her mother, Helen, a beautiful, calculating woman who can, with a mere look, send the meanest cur in Sugardale, Georgia running for its life.

Not even Twig's vivid imagination, keen wit, and dark sense of humor is enough to help her survive the escalating assaults of Helen and a new stepbrother, but help comes from an unexpected source--Frank, her stepfather. Sometimes, having one person who loves and believes in you is all a girl needs to keep hope alive.

Often raw and irreverent and sprinkled with all the Southern flavoring found in a good bowl of chicken and dumplings, BREAKING TWIG, is about finding love where we least expect it, destroying lives with easy lies, and realizing each of us determine our own truth.

Recent RAVE Reviews for Breaking TWIG

If you are looking for a book that takes a chance, tips the scale and
teeters on the edge of "How in the hell did she write this?!?" Then
Deborah Epperson is your girl and Breaking Twig is your story."  Melissa
E. Perea, Five-Star Reader Review

"With a voice as rich as sorghum molasses, Epperson seductively draws the
reader into the rural south of the 60s and 70s. In the southern
tradition of Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner, the author
explores the depths of the human heart and spirit, with wisdom, humor,
and unflinching truthfulness."  D. Burke, Five-star Reader Review

Breaking TWIG eBook Deborah Epperson

I don't know where to start with this review. I read a lot of books. Some of them are quick reads and others take some time. I found that Breaking Twig captured my attention at the beginning and held it through the entire book.

My heart would break for Rebecca and her abused childhood. I was angry when she was raped by her stepbrother. I know that people feel that the stepfather sat by but I feel that Frank really did help her - as much as he could in that time. I hated her mother - I think I hated her mother more than I hated her stepbrother until the mother FINALLY tells her daughter the truth. Rebecca said it best when she said that a person who was never shown love didn't know how to show it. I don't think her relationship with her mother will ever be perfect but Rebecca is a smart woman and, even though she had a tough childhood, she WAS shown loave. It is easy to sit back and think that Rebecca and Frank's relationship was wrong but I saw that as what saved this young lady. Other than Johnny he was the only one who showed her true love. Rebecca may have been younger than Frank but she was older than many people. She was never able to be a child so why compare her to a child. Secrets and lies can alter the way we think and/or feel about someone, They can make us like people we shouldn't like and make us hate people that we just aren't understanding. Truth - I have always felt the truth is best all the time but was in tears when Rebecca asked the prosecutor about truth and when it is convenient. I want to give the type of review that this book deserves but without just repeating the entire book it would be hard. I finished this book in less than 24 hours because I was so caught up in the characters of the story and in the emotions that those same characters evoked in us. I applaud Ms. Epperson for this heart breaking/heart wrenching story. I intend to read more of her books.

Breaking TWIG eBook Deborah Epperson Reviews

Becky Leigh, nicknamed Twig, has survived a vicious mother and horrific growing-up years, as anything that has meaning is ripped away by circumstances or her mother's wrath. Despite the pitfalls and sorrows, Twig manages to survive and become a stronger, independent woman. While this is a stand alone story, I can definitely see there being a sequel, bringing back the colorful characters. Good character development and people toward whom you have empathy and sympathy, as we'll as some genuine loathing. The storyline is strong, predictable in a few spots, but not so often to disappoint the reader. The majority of the book, while not being light and upbeat, is well worth the read.
Picks and pickers.....the basis for this entire story and one to dwell on as we think about it as it applies to ourselves. A deep and tragic story where we are left to determine which truth is reality. Characters to make you love or hate them...but so true to themselves. Not until the end of the story do we catch a glimpse of love and affection that is unique in its steadfastness and given in the only manner the person can love. Really makes the reader stop and think. We all do the best we can with life and what we've learned or been provided with during our formative years. We are all deeper than what we show to each other in public. We all tell our own truth...but not necessarily the truth. Super novel!
Breaking Twig is a heartfelt and compelling book about finding our way in a world full of disappointment, lies, hurt, and, most importantly, love. Becky, whose nickname is Twig, has suffered at the hands of her mother and others, in some ways that are unimaginable and unspeakable. Her grandfather taught her about Pickers, those who manipulate and take advantage of others, and the Picks who are their victims. Becky is determined not to remain a Pick, and sometimes feels it's her fate to become a Picker like her mother. Watching Becky grow and determine her own destiny is a roller coaster of emotions; every time she reaches the top, something always seems destined to bring her down. Somehow Becky must find the strength to overcome the twists and turns that life hands her. You will find yourself cheering her on, wanting so badly for her to find happiness, love, and peace, as the lies she has lived, and the lies she has told come crashing down around her. This is such a rich, riveting story, one will stay with the reader for a long time.
Let me start off by saying I am an AVID reader. I have an appetite for reading that is insatiable. I'll finish a book and immediately reach (click) for the next thing to read. Breaking Twig left me wanting more, more, and more. I finished it in less than 24 hours (yeah, you know that car you honked at that was stopped at a green light? That was probably me, reading in traffic...), but I didn't move on to the next book immediately. I sat back and reflected on the story told in Breaking Twig. It was a strange sensation for me to be done with a book and not on the prowl for the next; so odd, even my children commented on it!

Breaking Twig will have you laughing, crying, cheering - to put it simply, you are INVOLVED with this book. Sure, as a reader, you can't put it down, not just because it is a great read, but because Deborah Epperson pulls you in with her fluid writing skill and believable characters.

I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the next novel from this very talented author.
Reality isn't always rainbows and flowers. Often it's been brushed under the carpet for hundreds of years. Taking the time set of this book with the actions it's sad to say but it's spot on. It isn't prettied up with pink bows and glitter cannons. Welcome to reality, I lived it. I am a survivor and damn proud of it. Those who gave this book a one all did it because of its realism. I give it 5 stars for just that. I was blessed with a mother better than this child's but my mother still did things to me that would get her put in jail now or have me taken away by child welfare. My stepfather was a pedophile and once my mother found out, he was history. I thank her for that but the damage was done. Molestations twists you up inside forever. It's been 45 years and it still affects my life. Thank you for shining a light on the reality that not all women wore pearls while vacuuming like June Cleaver.
